In the last post, we finished Year 3 and the rebuild looks to be almost complete. We continue on with the offseason in this post, enjoy!
To start off with, I discovered that our AHL team made the playoffs but lost in the first round, so that was about that. In the NHL playoffs, the West came down to the Sharks and the Blackhawks, which saw the Sharks finally making it to the Stanley Cup Finals in a tense seven game series. In the East, Carolina beat Ottawa to advance to the Finals, after Ottawa outlasted the defending champions in the previous round. In the Finals, in the matchup between two teams yet to lift the Cup, it was Carolina who ended the Sharks' dream in a six-game series. Here are the end of season awards.
Stanley Cup: Carolina Hurricanes
Presidents' Trophy: Chicago Blackhawks
Maurice Richard: Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals
Ted Lindsay: Jeff Skinner, Carolina Hurricanes
Frank J. Selke: Sidney Crosby, Pittsburg Penguins
Bill Masterson: Robert Hagg, Philidelphia Flyers
William M. Jennings: Corey Crawford, Chicago Blackhawks
Vezina: Roberto Luongo, Florida Panthers
Conn Smythe: Cam Ward, Carolina Hurricanes
Calder: Hunter Shinkaruk, Vancouver Canucks
Lady Byng: Jeff Skinner, Carolina Hurricanes
James Norris: Morgan Reilly, Toronto Maple Leafs
Hart: Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning
Art Ross: Sidney Crosby, Pittsburg Penguins
On award night, Robert Hagg became our first player to lift an individual award, winning the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy, which was a nice sight. Also, I'm thinking of trading for Morgan Reilly, and I realize that we had a bad experience with the former Maple Leaf defenseman Cory Franson, but I really believe a move for Reilly would be a really good one.
During the retirement phase of the offseason, we saw that a Flyer great had retired as Kimmo Timonen hung up the skates. Around the league, Big Joe Thornton, Patrick Elias, Marian Hossa, and Vincent Lecavalier, a former Flyer, all retired as well.
Heading into the draft, we had one first round pick, two second rounders, and a fourth and a fifth. Our first round pick was third overall, giving us another good young player.
First Round: Cale Fleury, defensemen, 18 years old, 50 overall, 4 1/2 yellow star potential
Second Round: Evan Smith, goalie, 20 years old, 68 overall, 4 yellow star potential
Second Round: Glenn Gawdin, center, 20 years old, 70 overall, 4 red star potential
Fourth Round, Kyle Maksimovic, left winger, 19 years old, 60 overall, 4 red star potential
Fifth Round: Tyson Helgesen, defensemen, 20 years old, 63 overall, 3 yellow star potential
I'm exicted about Fleury the defensemen and Smith the goalie, but everyone else looks about average. After that, we progressed on to resignings.
Resigned:
Sean Couturier, 1 year, 1.935 million dollars
Andre Burakovsky, 1 year, 1.825
Brooks Laich, 2 years, 2.45
Robert Hagg, 3 years, 2.17
Shayne Gotisbehere, 3 years, 2.255
Zbynek Michalek, 1 year, 1.305
Andrey Makarov, 1 year, 0,9
Did Not Resign:
None
I resigned everyone, given that I had the money and wanted to keep everyone available.
Before I got into free agency, I really wanted a good top 2 defenseman, and I found one I really wanted in Oliver Ekman-Larsson from the Phoenix Coyotes, a guy who has always been acknowledged as a top defenseman in the NHL GM mode community. We sent Phoenix Michael Del Zotto, who had been horrible and was scheduled to hit free agency, and two prospects in Dustin Perillat and Adam Mascherin, two of our draft picks from this series. Ekman-Larsson is 25 years old, 87 overall, and still has 4 1/2 yellow star potential.
We signed:
Ryan White, center, 80 overall, 29 years old, 2 years, 1.15 million dollars
Ryan Reaves, right winger, 80 overall, 30 years old, 2 years, 1.2 million dollars
Small signings, but some slight improvements to our fourth line. We also found two 4 1/2 star potential goalies, so they may get into the team, and I'll tell you more about them if they do. Here are the lines.
Forwards
Burakovsky(85)-Giroux(91)-Voracek(91)
Duclair(83)-Couturier(85)-Forsberg(86)
Laich(83)-Killorn(85)-Phillips(80)
Lemieux(80)-White(80)-Reaves(80)
Defensemen
Ekman-Larsson(87)-Hagg(85)
Gotisbehere(83)-Vatanen(84)
Pettersson(83)-Michalek(79)
Goalies
Campbell(88)
Makarov(83)
The team is looking better every season, and some of our top prospects are starting to really advance and become key members of our AHL team. Nicolas Meloche, our first ever draft pick in this series, is known a first line player in the AHL, so he will be up within a year or two. I'll have another top prospect report in the next post, look forward to that and the new season.
