Welcome back to the Flyers GM mode. In this post, we move to the trade deadline with our Philly Flyers, and for the first time in this GM mode, we are true contenders. Find out what happens!
The two needs that I identified on our team was the 2nd line center, which had been filled by Sean Couturier since the beginning of the GM mode, and the top defensive pairing. Oliver Ekman-Larsson had filled one spot on the top line, but we needed to find his partner. Both Robert Hagg and Sami Vatanen had struggled filling that spot, and I knew I had to trade one of them. I decided to move Vatanen, as he was three years older and already on a pretty big contract.
The first trade I made was trading Alex Killorn, who had become a bit of a flop, to the Vancouver Canucks, along with 2016 3rd round pick Riley Bruce, plus a future fourth round pick, in exchange for center Bo Horvat. Horvat is 22 years old with 4 yellow star potential, and has better passing and overall offensive abilities than Couturier or Killorn. This trade means that Couturier will move down to the third line for now, and Horvat will take over the second line center position.
To help out our defense, we found Matt Dumba from the Minnesota Wild. Dumba is 23 years old, 85 overall with 4 yellow star potential. He needs to improve his offensive game, but he has solid defense, plus physicals and excellent skating. He should go well with Ekman-Larsson on our first defensive pairing. The trade we made for Dumba included the aforementioned Vatanen, our 2016 fifth round pick Jacob Busch, and a future third round pick.
I was very happy with our haul from the trade deadline. We acquired Horvat and Dumba, two young- controllable players who will fill key positions on the team and should improve in the future, in exchange for two players who had hit their prime and were not going to be improving beyond what they already were. We also traded away depth picks and prospects, which showed the strength of our prospect pool. We've spent the past couple of years building our prospect pool, so that we can give up guys like Riley Bruce and Jacob Busch and not have to worry about the impact that they might have.
The other trades that were made around the league included Carl Hagelin going from the Rangers to the Panthers for a second round pick, and Jason Pominville leaving Minnesota for Montreal in exchange for a first round pick. Minnesota was as busy as we were on the deadline day, trading away two of their best players in a very obvious rebuild attempt.
See you next time, when we finish the regular season, and hopefully enter the playoffs for the first time.
