After a great playoff run that saw us miss out on lifting the Stanley Cup by two games, what will the future hold for the Flyers? The first step to seeing that future is the offseason, which will be covered in today's post. Enjoy!
Here are the end of season awards.
Stanley Cup: Colorado Avalanche
Presidents' Trophy: Toronto Maple Leafs
Maurice Richard: Tyler Seguin, Dallas Stars
Ted Lindsay: Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado Avalanche
Frank J. Selke: Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks
Bill Masterson: Fedor Tyutin, Columbus Blue Jackets
William M. Jennings: Robin Lehner, Ottawa Senators
Vezina: Robin Lehner, Ottawa Senators
Conn Smythe: Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado Avalanche
Calder: Nikita Scherbak, Montreal Canadians
Lady Byng: Patrick Kane, Chicago Blackhawks
James Norris: Erik Karlsson, Ottawa Senators
Hart: Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado Avalanche
Art Ross: Tyler Seguin, Dallas Stars
We did not take home a single award for the season, which definitely got me a little peeved. We had an excellent season and were not rewarded for it, but it is just another incentive to work harder and prove everyone wrong.
As expected, Zbynek Michalek chose to ride off into the sunset after the season ended, leaving the NHL after playing 917 games. Also retiring were Henrik Sedin, Scott Hartnell, a former Flyer, and Brad Richards.
Heading into the draft, I wanted to trade away Brooks Laich, who struggled massively during the season. Interestingly enough, the Avalanche offered us their second round pick for him, which I took. The team that beat us now has one of our former players. It will be interesting to see how that turns out. Here are our picks.
First Round: Marshall Shantz, right winger, 19 years old, 65 overall, 4 red star potential
Second Round: Philippe Burrows, left winger, 20 years old, 68 overall, 4 red star potential
Fourth Round: Sergei Datsyuk, right winger, 20 years old, 68 overall, 3 1/2 red star potential
Fifth Round: Mario Devos, center, 19 years old, 59 overall, 2 1/2 yellow star potential
Sixth Round, Abraham Gelech, defenseman, 20 years old, 63 overall, 3 red star potential
Seventh Round: Brett Crossley, center, 20 years old, 62 overall, 3 red star potential
None of our draftees look particularly good, but they are all solid depth players at worst, so that isn't that bad.
Resigned:
Jack Campbell, 3 years, 5.765 million dollars
Matt Dumba, 3 years, 2.945
Marcus Pettersson, 3 years, 1.37
Fillip Forsberg, 3 years, 4.31
Sean Couturier, 3 years, 3.905
Andre Burakovsky, 4 years, 3.09
Anthony Duclair, 4 years, 1.73
Did Not Resign:
None
I had the money again, so I resigned everyone I could. In case you're wondering, in three years Voracek's contract expires, and Giroux's expires the year after that, that's why so many contracts are structured around three or four years.
After the resignings, we progressed onto free agency. My only target was a good third line right winger and a fourth line left winger. We got both.
Signed:
Kris Versteeg, right winger, 32 years old, 82 overall, 2 years, 2.2 million dollars
TJ Galliardi, left winger, 30 years old, 81 overall, 1 year, 2.5 million dollars
Before starting year 5, I wanted to get back an old friend to help the team out. I traded with the Arizona Coyotes to acquire one of my favorite players from my NHL 13 Flyers GM mode, Brendan Perlini. Perlini is 22 years old, 83 overall with 4 yellow star potential. He'll fill the 2nd left winger role, which means Duclair will drop to the third line. I sent Arizona goalie Andrei Vasilevsky, who is fantastic at 86 overall, but no longer necessary to the team, and TJ Galliardi, who we just signed, but who they really wanted and would not do the trade without. In Vasilevsky's place, we called up Carl Schmidmeyer, who played a little bit last season, and who is 82 overall with 4 1/2 yellow star potential.
Next, we wanted a true top 2 defenseman, so we went out and got Seth Jones from the Nashville Predators. We gave up Matt Dumba, who did not work out for us last season, and another of our many goalie prospects. Jones is 86 overall, is 23 years old, and has 4 1/2 yellow star potential, so he should still have some room to grow. Hopefully, Jones will be a good partner with Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
Forwards
Burakovsky(85)-Giroux(90)-Voracek(90)
Perlini(83)-Horvat(85)-Forsberg(86)
Duclair(83)-Couturier(85)-Versteeg(81)
Lemieux(80)-White(80)-Reaves(80)
Defense
Ekman-Larsson(86)-Jones(86)
Gotisbehere(85)-Hagg(85)
Pettersson(83)-Meloche(83)
Goalies
Campbell(89)
Schmidmeyer(82)
Hopefully we can replicate the success of last season this year. We've gotten a little bit better, but hopefully these improvement can help the team perform even better, and hopefully we can stay clear of some of the injury problems that have plagued us in the past.
