I'm really enjoying making these at the moment, so expect to see tons of them.
So, our main goal at the trade deadline was to shift on older players and players that didn't play a role in our current team. The main guys I was looking to shift on were Matt Read(2nd line Left Wing) and Kimmo Timonen(2nd pairing on Defense). What I was looking for in exchange would be prospects or picks, and possibly a true left wing sniper for the second line.
We traded with our rivals, the New York Rangers, which is unrealistic but I don't care, for left wing prospect Anthony Duclair. Duclair is only 20, with good potential and is already 78 overall, so he'll be ready to play next year. We gave up Matt Read, defenseman Nick Schultz and the third round pick we got from Anaheim in the Vatanen trade. With two spots to fill, we called up Scott Laughton, a youngster who had already gotten some ice time in injury relief, to play the third line and moved Ray Whitney up to the second line. We also called up Mathias Ekholm, who we picked up in the Forsberg trade, to play the thrid defensive pair.
Notable deals on deadline day included Jaromir Jagr to the Lightning, Alex Tanguay to Nashville for a first round pick and our Duclair pickup.
I feel Duclair can be a monster on the power play and fill that second line sniper spot that we need to fill. Our team looks even worse now, so tanking is probably on its way. See you next time, when we finish the season.
