NXT Takeover: Toronto
November 19th, 2017
Location: Toronto, CA
Cedric Alexander vs Kassius Ohno
Although Kassius Ohno is a respected veteran of the NXT locker room, the Toronto crowd was clearly on the side of Cedric Alexander tonight. Alexander opened with a flurry of offense, striking Ohno from every angle, trying to keep the bigger man down with a springboard moonsault. Eventually, the Knockout Artist was back to his feet, sending Cedric sprawling with a nasty elbow. The two traded near falls, Ohno with a Discus Big Boot and Alexander with a suicide dive and an incredible diving elbow drop. Alexander tried twice to hit the Lumbar Check, but Ohno was just too big. Kassius went for a discus forearm, but Cedric stepped out of the way. Superkick off the jaw! The third time was the charm, as Alexander got all of the Lumbar Check, earning a shot at the NXT Championship.
Winner: Cedric Alexander
Nikki Cross(c) vs Peyton Royce- NXT Women's Championship Match
Nikki Cross opened this match with a series of strikes, all targeted toward the head of Peyton Royce. Whether that was her gameplan or not, most of Cross' offense during this match was centered around the challenger's head. Royce, for her part, was demeaning and arrogant, showing some impressive wrestling skill which only served to inflate her ego. Although she did get a near fall off a spinning heel kick, she let her arrogance rule her wrestling, leaving the ring to pose with the women's championship. That gave Cross the time to recover and hit The Purge to retain her title.
Winner and still NXT Women's Champion: Nikki Cross
The Authors of Pain(c) vs The Undisputed Era- NXT Tag Team Championship Match
Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly had to know that standing up, this match was a wash thanks to Akam and Rezar's incredible power. We saw it displayed throughout the match, as well as some alert management by Paul Ellering on the outside, helping his two charges stay a step ahead. But what the champions hadn't counted on was the teamwork of Fish and O'Reilly, as they were in constant communication, avoiding the worst of the offense. After a timely distraction from Adam Cole, the challengers were able to hit Chasing the Dragon on Akam, but Rezar made the save. The match broke down into a brawl, but again the teamwork was the difference, as Fish saved O'Reilly from taking a big headbutt, allowing O'Reilly to roll up Rezar for the win, stealing the tag team titles!
Winners and the NEW NXT Tag Team Champions: The Undisputed Era
Neville(c) vs Jack Gallagher- Cruiserweight Championship Match
Jack Gallagher attempted to out-wrestle Neville in the collar and elbow clinch, taking him to the mat with a hammerlock. Neville exchanged with some nasty strikes, and for the next few minutes, it was an even match. Gallagher was grounded following a butterfly suplex, but started to fire up, trying to get the Toronto crowd behind him. Neville countered a standing dropkick, delivering his reverse frankensteiner before applying the Rings of Saturn. With his outstanding technical accumen, Gallagher quickly relieved the pressure, hitting a headbutt for a two count. With Neville in the corner, he went for his running dropkick, but missed. Neville climbed to the top, hitting the Red Arrow for another defense of his title.
Winner and still Cruiserweight Champion: Neville
Apollo Crews vs Bobby Roode- NXT Championship Match
Both of these men held tons of power in reserve, and we saw it early on, as both took turns hitting suplexes and powerbombs. They traded moves off the middle rope, Bobby Roode hitting a blockbuster and Apollo Crews showing off a perfect dropkick. Roode showed he was willing to take it to new heights, literally, sending Apollo cascading to the mat with a back superplex. Signature spinebuster, was it time for the Glorious DDT? No, Crews slipped out, nailing Roode with an enziguri and a standing moonsault. He lifted the Glorious One, before delivering his spin-out powerbomb, but only for two. An elbow busted Roode wide open, but that only served to fire him up. With the whole Toronto crowd going wild, he threw caution to the wind, nailing a springboard blockbuster! Kick to the gut......Glorious DDT! One.......two.........but Crews survived! An exchange of forearms saw Crews connect again with an enziguri, into the sit-out powerbomb, and finished off with a standing shooting star press! One.........two...........but Bobby Roode got the shoulder up! We were witnessing a Match of the Year contender, but it wasn't even over yet! Apollo went for a roll-up, but Bobby kicked out and countered smoothly into a picture perfect swinging neckbreaker. Exhausted, he slowly lifted himself and Crews to the top rope. Roode was considering a top rope Glorious DDT that would surely end it, but Crews had other plans. Off the top, sunset flip powerbomb! One more time for the sit-out powerbomb, and it was finally over. Apollo Crews accomplished what no one ever thought he could, in a match that proved that NXT is just as good as it ever has been.
Winner and the NEW NXT Champion: Apollo Crews
