For much of its first season, Cloak & Dagger has mostly refused to accept its status as a superhero show. Subverting expectations has led to plenty of strong, nuanced episodes, as well as plenty of weak ones, bogged down by needless philosophical debates and little action. In the finale, all nuance and subtlety are thrown out the window, and I think this show is better for it.
For the first half, "Colony Collapse" starts slow, mostly working off what we saw last week. Tandy and Mina join together to battle the "terrors", before Mina becomes infected. Also, Tyrone and O'Reilly are arrested, and try and work together to escape. The police station comes under attack, and that allows Tyrone to do the unexpected, saving the people who are framing him for murder. None of this is particularly enthralling, but it's all necessary to set up the second act, which is the whole reason for the episode and show's existence. After working apart, Tandy and Tyrone join together to battle the hordes for only the second time all season, and the first in the real world. For as much as Cloak & Dagger enjoys its methodical pacing and character development, here it finally becomes a true superhero show. Although the action is brief, the significance is huge, as the two combine their powers to seal the damage done by Roxxon's drill. It's a fitting showcase for the "Divine Pairing", truly proving just how potent their power actually is.
While the plot is very straight forward this week, I still enjoyed the occasional character beats that were in this episode. We finally see Tandy return Tyrone's jacket, which he then uses in the finale, although he hasn't admitted to possessing her ballet shoe, for whatever that means. At the end, we also see a shift in dynamics, as Tandy is now more open and trusting, while Tyrone now hides from the world in the abandoned church. This is more out of necessity, as he's still on the hook for Fuchs' death, and I assume proving his innocence will be a big part of Season 2. Speaking of next season, it appears O'Reilly is evolving. After being shot and presumably killed by Connors, the post-credits scene reveals that of course, she's still alive and now seems to posses new powers. Those who have read the comics will know more of what this means, but I have a feeling that mayhem is coming.
8/10
Overall, this was a solid first season, with an entertaining but not groundbreaking finale. I enjoyed "Colony Collapse", and I'm looking forward to the future of this show, which should hopefully be quite bright. As much as I did mostly enjoy it, I have to say that Cloak & Dagger is not for everyone, and I certainly won't be rewatching this season. With most of the pieces now in place, Season 2 will hopefully be able to build on all of the flaws of Season 1, while still delivering on the solid action and nuanced, truly human characters. I've mostly enjoyed these first ten reviews, and I hope you have too. Goodbye for now, Cloak & Dagger. See you again in 2019.
