I certainly didn't want to have these preseason updates coming out for the Dog League as frequently as they have been, but this has been an active time in the league, and I don't want to fall behind and need to cover an avalanche of moves well after they occurred. Today, every team has had to hit the waiver wire, as I've re-introduced a Dog League staple of the past couple years: the extra bench spot. This spot on the roster can only be used for an extra defense or kicker, as for right now, all eight teams are exclusively using it on defense, resulting in every team now carrying two defensive units. That's not the only activity from today in the Dog League however, as we will start this post with the latest update on Irv Smith. (Reminder: the Dog League is a custom fantasy football league run on NFL.com)
Irv Smith Update
Earlier today, the Vikings tight end was ruled out for the next 4-5 months after surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his knee, an unfortunate end to what could've been a breakout year for him. The Growlers, who had originally drafted Smith to be their starting tight end before picking up Tyler Higbee a few days ago to fill the spot instead, have now dropped Smith to add a new backup quarterback. Said signal-caller is young Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, making his Dog League debut after a so-so rookie campaign. The Growlers hope Tagovailoa is only around to provide depth, with Josh Allen holding down the starting job, but they certainly wouldn't mind if Tagovailoa were to take a big step forward in his second year with a revamped receiving corps to throw to.
The Backup Defensive Brigade
We move now to all eight defensive moves, which I'll quickly list off here. The Comets added the Buccaneers, the Comets added the Patriots, Ridiculous Rascals added the 49ers, Tug of War added the Chiefs, Leaping Girl added the Browns, Bark Force added the Broncos, Tailwaggerz added the Chargers, and Rare Woofs added the Bears. With that, half the defenses in the NFL are now in the Dog League, significantly weakening the waiver wire. I doubt any of these defenses will make a Week 1 start, but I'm sure we'll see them rotate in and out based on matchup as the year goes on.
