Member Jabba the Hutt?
South Park continues to roll along, continuing one of it's strongest seasons in history. Although this episode had plenty of ups, there were definitely some downs. Not everyone's perfect, and it appears Matt and Trey have nailed the formula this year, though with some slight rough spots.
Let's start off where we ended last episode, with Cartman and his desperate attempt to reach Mars. This subplot has been pretty weak, although I have enjoyed Cartman's new character, and this week it reached new lows. Any scene featuring this story dragged the episode to a grinding halt, to the point where I really didn't care what happened by the end. It's a shame, really; Elon Musk's character work was very solid, and I've really enjoyed Butters this season, but this was an utter trainwreck.
Everything else was near perfection, though. The Member Berries have taken on a life of their own, and started to reveal their plan this week, as they began to work toward bringing in another Cold War. The mob boss character has been done a few times on this show(member Loogie?), and the Member Berries provide their own take on the character. With the threat of global war on the horizon, the President elect is busy threatening townspeople and generally being a bit of an ass. Garrison has been a wonderful proto-Trump, and his interaction with PC Principal was fantastic.
Speaking of things that are not fantastic, things are falling apart for Gerald. The Danish are looking to take over the world, and are planning on using the trolls to do it. Gerald, determined to keep his wife from finding out what he's been up to, sets Ike up to take the fall, which does indeed happen. By the end of the episode, it appears that Kyle may have put the pieces together and found his father's secret. One has to wonder what the end game is here: with only two more episodes left in the season, Gerald's retribution for his actions is going to be massive.
6/10
It's a shame I can't score this episode higher, but the Cartman/Heidi/Butters story dragged so much that's it's impossible to give any higher score. With two episodes to go, things are really heating up, and I'm very excited to see what twists lay in store.
