After a disappointing second round exit of the playoffs to the Ottawa Senators, our Flyers look to reload and prepare for the Year 6 campaign.
-End of Season Awards-
Stanley Cup: Ottawa Senators(defeated Colorado Avalanche, 4-3)
Presidents' Trophy: Colorado Avalanche
Maurice Richard: Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins
Ted Lindsay: Jonathan Drouin, Tampa Bay Lightning
Frank J. Selke: Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks
Bill Masterson: Fedor Tyutin, Columbus Blue Jackets
William M. Jennings: Jake Allen, St. Louis Blues
Vezina: Jack Campbell, Philadelphia Flyers
Conn Smythe: Robin Lehner, Ottawa Senators
Calder: Sergej Kvasha, Los Angeles Kings
Lady Byng: Jonathan Drouin, Tampa Bay Lightning
James Norris: Erik Karlsson, Ottawa Senators
Hart: Jonathan Drouin, Tampa Bay Lighning
Art Ross: Jonathan Drouin, Tampa Bay Lightning
The fact that we lost to the Stanley Cup champions in back to back years definitely proves that we are a talented team, and it was even stranger to see both of those teams meet up in the finals this year. Jonathan Drouin cleaned up on awards night, as expected, but it was great to see our goalie, Jack Campbell, get some recognition.
-Retirements-
No players retiring for us this year, as the team remains fairly young. Across the league, the likes of Patrick Marleau, Marian Gaborik, Duncan Keith and Patrick Sharp all hung up the skates. The champions lost quite a few, including the bane of our existence, Clarke MacArthur.
-NHL Draft-
I did contemplate a few trade offers, but I decided to wait until free agency to think about making moves. Here's a look at our draft picks.
First Round: Isaac Bertuzzi, defenseman, 18 years old, 63 overall, 4 yellow star potential
Fourth Round: Cody Madsen, left winger, 20 years old, 76 overall, 3 1/2 red star potential
Fifth Round: Leonard Earl, center, 18 years old, 65 overall, 3 1/2 red star potential
Fifth Round: Nelson Shattenkirk, left winger, 19 years old, 66 overall, 3 yellow star potential
Sixth Round: Sheldon Kariya, defenseman, 19 years old, 64 overall, 3 yellow star potential
Seventh Round: Len Bartkowski, center, 19 years old, 61 overall, 2 1/2 yellow star potential
I mostly went for younger players in this draft, leading to some interesting results. Bertuzzi could definitely be a part of our defensive corps in a few year's time, and Madsen could already help out a lot at the AHL level. Otherwise, just depth.
-Re-Signings-
Resigned:
Brendan Perlini, 3 years, 1.86 million dollars
Oliver Ekman-Larsson, 2 years, 4.9
Did Not Resign:
Ryan Reaves
Ryan White
Zac Rinaldo
I let go of a few third and fourth liners that were looking for one way contracts for cap flexibility, and got back both Perlini and Ekman-Larsson on pretty cheap money. A short but effective resigning phase.
-Free Agency-
With Ty Rattie's contract up next year, coming off of a poor playoff performance, we looked to ship him off. We found a good option with the New York Islanders, targeting Michael Dal Colle. The 23 year old left winger sits at a nice 84 overall, coming off of back to back 60 plus point seasons. He can definitely improve in the future, as he has 4 1/2 yellow star potential. Best of all, he's currently signed to a four year, 2.9 million dollar deal, great value for the position. We gave up Rattie, defenseman Marcus Pettersson and a fourth round pick next year to get him and veteran Mikhail Grabovski, who was added to make the salaries work. With Pettersson now gone, we needed another defenseman, and that lead to one of two signings in free agency.
Signed:
Brendan Smith, defenseman, 30 years old, 82 overall, 1 year, 3.75 million dollars
We also decided to bring back Ryan Reaves on a one year deal to offer fourth line depth.
-End of Offseason-
Here's a look at the new lines heading into Year 6 of this GM Mode.

I'm not sure when the next post of this series will be, since we have the NFL season starting on Thursday. Once I get into the rhythm of posting Dog League content, I may start opening up time for doing other posts, so I expect it'll at least be a months' wait. We'll just have to wait and see.
