The first dual branded pay-per-view of Season 5 is Money in the Bank, as six women and eight men vie for the opportunity to change their careers forever.
Money in the Bank 2019 Card
Braun Strowman vs Rusev
Now "free" from the "dead weight" of Aiden English, Rusev has been on a mission to eradicate all tag team wrestling. In a Money in the Bank Qualification Match between Jeff and Matt Hardy, Rusev beat down and injured both men, before claiming that he should take his spot in the ladder match. Edge, however, had other ideas, as he decided to pit Rusev against the "Monster Among Men" for the final spot in the match.
The Bar(c) vs The Ascension- Raw Tag Team Championship Match
After revitalizing their careers in NXT, Konnor and Viktor have picked up quite a few wins on the Raw brand, even defeating the Authors of Pain in an impressive display to become number one contenders. Will Cesaro and Sheamus be dethroned at Money in the Bank?
Andrade "Cien" Almas(c) vs Chad Gable- Intercontinental Championship Match
Almas and Gable have been rivals since December of last year, and for the first time, it appears momentum is in Gable's corner. American Alpha would cost Almas a match with Bobby Roode a few weeks ago after a distraction(offering Zelina Vega a Ready, Willing and Vega shirt), which has rattled the Intercontinental Champion. With his title reign hanging in the balance, Almas will need to regain his confidence in this final battle between long time foes.
Women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match
Big names would immediately qualify for this match on the Raw side, as Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair fought their way in. The final qualification match was between upstart Naomi and former multi-time champion Alexa Bliss, and in a shocker, Naomi got the win after avoiding Twisted Bliss and applying the Slay-o-mission.
On the SmackDown side, The IIconics would cost Sasha Banks her spot in the match, allowing last year's winner Shayna Baszler to qualify. That would set up a fatal four way between Royce, Kay, Bayley and Banks for the second spot, which Sasha won after tapping out her best friend with the Bank Statement. The final spot was up for grabs in a big match, as former champions Kairi Sane and Paige squared off. Sane got the win with the InSane Elbow, earning the final spot in the match.
Men's Money in the Bank Match
The opening match of Part 2 is the men's ladder match, which features The Miz, Kevin Owens, EC3 and Jon Moxley from Raw, in addition to Finn Balor, Johnny Gargano and Bobby Roode from SmackDown.
One night after Extreme Rules, EC3 made his Raw debut, revealing that he had signed the most lucrative contract of any NXT call-up ever which came with the ability to select his opponent in a qualification match. Tyler Breeze attempted to get the match, but the "Top One Percent" would select Gran Metalik instead, who nearly shocked EC3 several times before being put away. The final Raw spot was earned by Jon Moxley, who out-lasted AJ Styles and Ricochet in a triple threat match to continue his quest for gold. Meanwhile on SmackDown, Roode would be given his spot by Edge after beating Almas, though of course there is still one more spot left to be determined by Part 1's opener.
Ruby Riott(c) vs Toni Storm- Raw Women's Championship Match
After finally defeating Becky Lynch to become champion at Bad Blood, Ruby Riott was on top of the world, and made a brazen open challenge just one night later. Her challenge would be answered by former NXT Women's Champion Toni Storm, who pinned the new champion in a non-title match. Storm was quickly declared number one contender, but she paid for it after a vicious 3 on 1 beatdown from the Riott Squad on the go-home episode of Raw.
Sami Zayn(c) vs Daniel Bryan vs John Cena- WWE Championship Match
Bryan and Cena fought to a draw in their Last Man Standing Match at Judgment Day, meaning neither had earned number one contendership. But Sami Zayn, riding high off his defense against Samoa Joe, ended up telling Edge he would fight both men. Cena thanked Zayn for the opportunity by hitting the champion with an F-U and standing tall with the WWE Championship. But Cena's continued disrespect has left him with two enemies now, as Bryan approached Zayn, looking to form an alliance. Zayn accepeted with a handshake, as both men will look to ensure that one of them leaves Money in the Bank as WWE Champion.
Shinsuke Nakamura(c) vs Aleister Black- Universal Championship Match
Aleister Black earned another shot at Raw's top prize thanks to defeating Kane inside Hell in a Cell,a truly monumental victory. But Shinsuke Nakamura was quick to doubt Black's chances, pointing out that Aleister has now lost three straight times to the "King of Strong Style", as well as referencing Aleister Black losing the Universal Championship at this pay-per-view one year ago. Black has remained largely silent, completely focused on regaining his title at any cost, not rising to any of Nakamura's taunts or mind games. Can Aleister Black finally do what he's failed at so many times before, or will Shinsuke Nakamura's seven month title reign continue? Find out in Money in the Bank's main event!
