Tuba music intensifies....
Extreme Rules 2016 Score: 7/10
- Before I start, brief shout-out to the commentary team, who killed it all night. That's the best I've heard a WWE commentary team since the days of JR and the King, and they deserve some props.
- The Miz and Dean Ambrose have not had the greatest of matches during their near six-month feud, but I have to say that tonight's was the best. Although the middle of the match was kind of muddled, the psychology involved near the finish was top notch. Get out the champagne and strike up the bank, because The Miz's Never-Ending Intercontinental Championship World Tour is back in town, and we're all the better for it.
- Although I may not like it, I understand why Sasha was thrown into a low-scale cruiserweight feud. Using her to help the stature of a guy like Rich Swann is a smart move, and those two are an excellent combo.
- On the other hand, I have no clue what Raw is doing with Alexa Bliss and Bayley. This match made absolutely no sense in terms of booking, and just made everyone involved look worse. Just a confounding five minutes of wrestling.
- I was excited to see The Miz win the Intercontinental Championship, but I was stoked to see Cesaro and Sheamus win the tag team championships. It's about time they got the belts back, as they have been killing it over the past few months. This was an excellent steel cage match, far better than last year's Ambrose Asylum debacle. Teasing some dissension in House Hardy is also an interesting move. High fives all around.
- Neville and Austin Aries have put on some great matches during their feud, and unfortunately this one couldn't quite compete. It was a fine match, hampered by a weird stipulation(why are there count-outs and DQs in a Submission Match?). What's next for Aries, though? Losing three championship matches in a row does not bode well for his title hopes.
- As I said on Twitter before the match, the main event could feasibly have almost anyone win it and have it make sense. Everyone involved looked great, and all got a chance to shine and get over. The spots were well executed, the psychology was top notch, and the ending was unbelievably tense. In the end, it was Samoa Joe that got the win. As Corey Graves rightfully pointed out, Joe vs Lesnar is a bonafide dream match, one most wrestling fans thought we would never see. I think Joe is a great winner, and the perfect man to challenge Lesnar. I will say this though: we got a treat in the main event, and an awesome winner in Joe. However, all I can see are complaints from fans, who expect Joe to be squashed by Brock. I can't tell you whether or not this will be a competitive affair or not, but this is a true dream match, so let's not let it get overshawdowed with our cynicism, okay?
6/10
A solid show with a great main event that had the crowd invested throughout leads to a decent score. And hey, any world where we still have Great Balls of Fire on the docket can't be a bad one, right?
