F***ing social media, right?
I'll start off this review by saying that this was one of the best South Park episodes I've ever watched. From top to bottom, this episode captured everything the show is about, from delivering wacky humor to insightful social commentary to genuine emotional moments. Almost everything was perfect, perhaps the greatest half an hour that Matt and Trey have ever written. Let's dive into it.
The whole episode is centered around online trolling, but particularly the troll revealed last week, skankhunt42, who is in fact Kyle's dad. We start out by seeing Heidi Turner, overcome by the harassment, quit Twitter, throwing her phone into a river. The comparison of leaving social media to suicide is a bit out there, but I feel they did it in a tasteful way. We get an excellent scene of Gerald's trolling and the damage he's causing, while jamming out to Boston. All of Gerald's work in this episode is incredible, plus it's cool to see a troll portrayed as an average, every day person, something not normally done. By the end of the episode, we see that Gerald has caused irreparable damage, and it will be interesting to see if his character can redeem his wrongs.
The boys still suspect Cartman as the troll, and look to take him out before the girls take them out. In some more amazing work, we see the boys planning the ultimate act of villainy, before luring Cartman out to the woods and destroying all of his electronics. Everyone's reactions are fantastic, coupled with the fact that the viewer knows that this is, ultimately, all for naught. Sure enough, the troll strikes again, and the boys are forced to confront the fact that they've made a massive mistake.
The girls are, at the same time, plotting against the boys, believing that one of them is the troll, or perhaps past the point of caring. They enact their revenge, breaking up with every boy in the school, or at least it felt that way, leading to a surprisingly emotional moment to close out the episode.
9/10
The biggest takeaway from all of this is that, despite everyone's best efforts, they've failed to even come close to catching the actual troll. There's still a lot of story left to tell, and with the divide in the school greater than ever before, and no way of fixing the damage that's been caused. I know a certain principal who might be able to help with this mess. In terms of the actual episode, it was a fantastic blend of everything you would want in a South Park episode. Add to this a Mackey subplot that was decent enough, and you've got one hell of a good time.
