Kurt Angle vs Billy Gunn- King of the Ring Qualifying Match
This was an interesting King of the Ring qualifier, as Angle's wrestling tenacity faced off against Gunn's power and brawling style. Early on it appeared that Gunn was in the driver's seat, but a succession of suplexes perfectly executed by Angle put an end to that idea. Angle was in control of the match, and looked to finish it off with an Ankle Lock, but Gunn squirmed his way out. Angle, frustrated, lost his head for a second and that was all that was needed for Gunn, who connected with the Famouser. Angle, though, had the ring savvy to find the bottom rope. Angle fought back to his feet and dropped Gunn with an Angle Slam, but it was Gunn who found the bottom rope this time. Angle, enraged, was nearly caught by a roll-up from Gunn. Ultimately though, Gunn fell prey to a second Angle Slam, which was enough to put him away.
Winner and qualifying for King of the Ring: Kurt Angle
Bad News Barrett vs Drew McIntyre- King of the Ring Qualifying Match
This was an all-Brit affair as the Englishman Bad News Barrett took on the Scot Drew McIntyre. McIntyre is not named "The Chosen One" for nothing, taking it to Barrett in the early going with a wide variety of strike and suplexes. McIntyre looked to be in full control, but Barrett took the fight to the outside, where he was more comfortable. Back inside the ring, Barrett dropped McIntyre with a Winds of Change, going for the cover. At the count of 2, McIntyre got his foot to the bottom rope, but the ref failed to notice it, counting for the third time. After the match, McIntyre was clearly furious and Barrett was unhappy with the decision as well. Smackdown GM Teddy Long calmed both men down and promised to resolve the situation over the coming weeks.
Winner and qualifying for King of the Ring: Bad News Barrett
Rey Mysterio vs Big Show- King of the Ring Qualifying Match
The Ultimate Underdog was forced to do what Sting tried on Monday Night, playing giant killer against the massive Big Show. Rey actually got quite a bit of offense in on Big Show, who was clearly caught off guard. Big Show quickly fought back, though, tossing Rey all over the ring. A turning point came when Big Show went for his spear, which would've put Rey out, but Rey countered and connected on the 619, who wasn't quite able to keep Big Show down for the count. Rey went for a second 619, but Big Show dodged and dropped Rey with a WMD, which surprisingly was not enough to get the 3 count. Rey just had the wherewithal and the strength to set up for the 619 again, this time connecting and getting the 3 count. A big victory over the giant Big Show, who seemed very displeased over the result of this match.
Winner and qualifying for King of the Ring: Rey Mysterio
Daniel Bryan vs Austin Aries- King of the Ring Qualifying Match
The final King of the Ring spot was on the line as Smackdown saw a potential classic with Daniel Bryan facing Austin Aries. Both men were trying to rebound from high profile losses, Bryan in his WWE Title Match at Extreme Rules and Aries from his elimination in the Number One Contender's Chase. Bryan had a brief spell of offense to start the match, but Aries would dominate for a long while after. The Greatest Man That Ever Lived picked Bryan apart, limiting Daniel's mobility and keeping him grounded. A rolling elbow followed by a brainbuster seemed to have given Aries a easy win, but Bryan found a way to kick out. Spurned on a partisan crowd, Bryan fought back, hitting a flying headbutt and a running knee, but Aries shocked everyone by kicking out. Just as Bryan seemed to be gaining momentum and getting close to putting it away, Aries caught Bryan by surprise, rolling up and getting a shock 3 count. Afterwards, both men shook hands as a sign of respect after an epic battle.
Winner and qualifying for King of the Ring: Austin Aries
Batista vs Dolph Ziggler- WWE Title #1 Contender's Match
The Animal Batista received a massive ovation as he faced Dolph Ziggler in his hometown of Washington, D.C. Ziggler was not about to be intimidated by Batista's size or his hometown support; Dolph had made it this far, and he was determined to become the new number one contender. Batista's power was difficult for Ziggler to handle, and Dolph tried to keep the Animal on the ground for as long as possible. Just as it looked like the Showoff could pull of the opposite, he was caught by a vicious spear, right into the devastating Batista Bomb, which somehow wasn't enough to keep Ziggler down. Ziggler once again go back into it, dropping Batista to the mat. A bunch of elbows wasn't enough to keep Batista down, and Ziggler climbed to the top rope. Whatever he was looking for, it didn't matter as he leaped right into a second Batista Bomb, as the Animal claimed victory in his own backyard. WWE Champion Randy Orton then made his way down to the ring, and the two stared down as the crowd went wild for what should be a colossal collision.
