Prime Time Players vs Edge and Christian- WWE Tag Team Titles #1 Contender's Match
The team of Edge and Christian got a huge opportunity to kick off Smackdown, taking on the former tag team champions, with a title match next week on the line. Edge and Christian clearly went in with a game plan, isolating Darren Young, but that didn't last long once Titus was tagged in. Following some dominant offense from Titus, Darren Young tagged back in as the two executed their tag finisher for a close two count. Darren tagging in played into the opposition's favor, as Edge and Christian beat down on Mr. No Days Off, hitting their tag finisher, a clothesline-spear combo, for another close two count. Edge and Christian made a big mistake, attempting to get cheap shots in on Titus once he tagged back in. This only served to anger the big man, who decimated Edge with the Clash of the Titus for a decisive victory.
Winners: The Prime Time Players
Adam Rose vs Alberto Del Rio
Both men were eager for a win, looking for an extra boost of momentum. Del Rio's gameplan of working on the arms of Rose was a solid one, and he nearly won it early with the Cross Armbreaker. Rose fought on, attempting to survive and looking for the Party Foul, intending to finish off Del Rio. A counter from the Mexican Aristocrat spelled disaster for the Party Animal, and a second Cross Armbreaker was locked in, forcing the tap out.
Winner: Alberto Del Rio
Tyson Kidd vs Bad News Barrett- King of the Ring First Round Match
The first of two King of the Ring matches had an international flavor, as the Canadian Tyson Kidd took on the Englishman Bad News Barrett. Kidd's high flying and technical expertise proved a dangerous combination, as Barrett struggled to get into the match. Kidd nearly had it won off a Code Blue neckbreaker, but Barrett just found the strength to kick out. Despite his best efforts, Kidd could not put away the Bare Knuckle Brawler, and that was crucial in the match. Barrett is the king of guy that's lethal when you let him stay alive, and he proved it, turning Kidd's lights out with a Bull Hammer and advancing to the next round.
Winner and advancing in King of the Ring: Bad News Barrett
Dolph Ziggler vs Daniel Bryan- United States Title #1 Contender's Match
Dolph was determined to earn a title shot, by any means necessary, and drew the ire of the crowd when he jumped Bryan during his Bryan's entrance. Ziggler proceeded to destroy Bryan, beating him up inside and outside of the ring. Only Bryan's spirit kept him in it, as he survived multiple superkicks and outlasted Ziggler's sleeper hold. Ziggler, frustrated, then took to the skies, putting Bryan through the announce table with an astonishing elbow drop. Bryan was by no means out of the match, landing a surprising amount of offense on the Show-Off, nearly putting Ziggler away several times. Finally, the killing blow connected, as Ziggler dropped Bryan with the Zig Zag, which was enough for a big victory, though he had to resort to underhanded tactics to get it.
Winner: Dolph Ziggler
Eddie Guerrero vs Kurt Angle- King of the Ring First Round Match
Eddie Guerrero was entering enemy territory, facing hometown boy Kurt Angle in our second King of the Ring match. Angle, on the strength of the fans, tossed Eddie around the ring with suplex after suplex. Belly to Bellys, Germans, Northern Ligths, suplex after suplex after suplex, as Eddie struggled to get back into things. Eddie tried foolishly to out wrestle Angle, and was punished for it when Angle reversed into the Angle Slam, though Eddie found a way to kick out. Angle appeared to have used everything in his arsenal, and Eddie took the opportunity to get back into it with his own volley of suplexes, the Three Amigos. Eddie then went to the top rope, looking for the finishing blow, the Frog Splash, but Angle saw it coming and got out of the way. He then locked in the Ankle Lock, in the center of the ring as the crowd went nuts. Eddie knew he was in trouble but refused to give up, as the hold was tightened and tightened. With Eddie refusing to tap and and Angle refusing to let go, the hold was locked in for over five minutes, the pain excruciating. Finally, just before he could reach the ropes, Eddie passed out from the pain and the ref stopped the match. In a show of respect for his effort, Angle and Eddie shook hands after the match, following what was an incredible battle.
Winner and advancing in King of the Ring: Kurt Angle
