Shinsuke Nakamura vs Goldust
We kicked off Raw in a big way, in this case literally, as Shinsuke Nakamura quickly went to work on Goldust in our opening contest. Goldust was unable to avoid many of Nakamura's smooth, precise strikes, and ended up having to rely more on a power game to survive. The veteran's new tricks might've gotten the job done on any other competitor, but Nakamura was wise to it, and he was able to escape long enough to connect with the Kinshasa and deliver the victory.
Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura

After the match, Nakamura exited the ring and snatched a microphone away from a confused R-Truth, who was at ringside to support his tag team partner. In his usual charismatic manner, Shinsuke made his point very clear: he wants Rusev, and he wants the United States Championship. He would get neither, as Jinder Mahal intervened. Despite losing to Rusev at Summerslam, Mahal still had an air of arrogance behind him as he reminded Shinsuke that he lost to Jinder on Raw a few weeks prior. If he wanted the US Championship, he would have to beat the Modern Day Maharajah. Shinsuke looked miffed that his challenge wasn't answered, but agreed to face Mahal next week.
Dolph Ziggler vs Curt Hawkins
This was the Universe Mode debut of Curt Hawkins, who had been very active on social media leading up to this match, promising fans a show like never before. For all his big talk, Hawkins was quite impressive here, battling a former United States Champion in Dolph Ziggler. He delivered nice, crisp offense, and even managed to show some tenacity in kicking out of a Zig-Zag. Dolph didn't find the newcomer's fighting spirit as impressive, and his frustration started to build. Ziggler simply out-classed Curt Hawkins, and connected on a Famouser. That would've been enough to put the match away, but Dolph felt the need to teach a lesson to this youngster, hitting another Zig-Zag.
Winner: Dolph Ziggler
The Shield vs ???
All three members of the Hounds of Justice seemed ready to go, as they made their traditional entrance through the crowd. As they entered the ring and prepared for action, however, the devious Chad Gable and Jason Jordan charged the ring, taking out Dean Ambrose with a Grand Amplitude, leaving Rollins and Reigns to do battle.
A battle is what it was, as a fired up Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns exchanged blows with Gable and Jordan. This was a partial rematch from the match they had on Raw the week before Summerslam, and Gable and Jordan were eager to avenge their loss in that match. Their tactics may be slightly unethical, but their abilities are unmatched, and the former tag team champions seemed destined for victory. That was until Dean Ambrose charged back into the fray, right as Rollins was in danger of taking the Grand Amplitude. The Lunatic Fringe's distraction was enough to let Seth make the tag, and the Big Dog ended the fight with a Spear.
Winners: The Shield
Next Week on Raw
On the next edition of Raw, we will see Shinsuke Nakamura take on Jinder Mahal, after Shane McMahon signed off on their verbal agreement. Plus, after defeating The Undertaker at Summerslam, Universal Champion Samoa Joe gives a eulogy for the Phenom. And stay tuned for SmackDown Live later this week, as GM Daniel Bryan addresses the future of both brand's women's divisions, in an announcement that could change Universe Mode forever.
