Welcome to the very first episode of The Rebuild. The plan for this series is to post four games per episode, which should get us through seasons fairly quickly. In this very first episode, we play the first four games of the first season, including divisional match-ups against the Cardinals and Seahawks.
Week 1(at Los Angeles Rams)
We opened up the season on the road, taking on the Rams, who have two of our former players in left end Henry Anderson and defensive tackle Al Woods. This was an ugly game, with both teams committing plenty of turnovers. Starting QB Jacoby Brissett was absolutely atrocious(9-18, 0 TD, 3 INT), never really managing to move the ball, and was benched in the fourth quarter in favor of Chad Kelly. Despite that, the Colts defense put on a show. D'Joun Smith and Quincy Wilson each picked off Jared Goff, but the highlight of the game was Antonio Morrison's strip sack which resulted in a Scott Crichton defensive touchdown. In the end, consecutive sacks from Crichton and Ik Enemkpali sealed the unlikely win.
Final Score: Indianapolis Colts 19, Los Angeles Rams 16
(During the game against the Rams, middle linebacker Sam Barrington suffered a shoulder tear and will miss the next three games. Jeremiah George will fill in his spot).
Week 2(vs Arizona Cardinals)
Our home opener came in Week 2, as we battled David Johnson and the Cardinals in our first divisional game. The Cardinals did have one of our former players, in wide receiver Kamar Aiken. Unfortunately, there wasn't much for the home fans to cheer about today, as the team came back down to earth following the Week 1 win. David Johnson ran wild, totaling 159 yards and two TDs, while Carson Palmer passed for two more. On the positive end, the defense did get six sacks, with Matthew Judon getting three. QB Jacoby Brissett struggled once more, passing for just 164 yards with another INT, leading to Chad Kelly coming on in the fourth quarter once more, although he also threw an INT. RB Tarik Cohen, after running for 74 yards and his first TD in Week 1, only could manage 41 yards on 9 carries with a fumble. Overall, not a good day for this young team.
Final Score: Arizona Cardinals 31, Indianapolis Colts 3
(Two more injuries for the Colts this week, as right end Hassan Ridgeway will miss four games, while middle linebacker Anthony Walker Jr broke his thumb and will miss the next two games).
Week 3(vs Cleveland Browns)
Our third game of the season saw us matched up against the winless Browns. We fell victim to the big play here, as two long runs by Isaiah Crowell and a return touchdown hampered an otherwise solid performance. The offense played well, with Jacoby Brissett posting up 289 yards passing with two touchdowns, although he did throw another interception. Our highlight of the game had to be rookie K.D. Cannon's long 59 yard touchdown reception, but out top performer was tight end Daniel Brown, who caught 5 passes for 77 yards. There weren't too many opportunities for sacks in this one, as the Browns only threw the ball eight times, but rookie Grover Stewart got the first two sacks of his career. We did stay healthy throughout the game, so that's another positive.
Final Score: Cleveland Browns 38, Indianapolis Colts 20
Week 4(at Seattle Seahawks)
The games don't get any tougher than this, as we traveled away to Seattle to face the Seahawks, who have won their first three games. The oddsmakers would've put the odds at a million to one or more that we would be trounced, but there's a reason why they don't play football. Late in the first quarter, Rashawn Melvin became a hero, recording a pick six off of Russell Wilson, and two Adam Vinatieri field goals gave us a 13-3 lead. Unfortunately, we just couldn't hold that unlikely lead. Eddie Lacy ran in one touchdown, and a Tyler Lockett receiving touchdown in the fourth quarter sunk our hopes. Our playcalling was very conservative throughout this game, as we didn't want our young players to be forced into too many mistakes. This decision cost the team, but did make sure the game remained close. A lack of a running game also hurt, as Tarik Cohen could only total 16 yards on 10 carries, forcing rookie Marlon Mack to replace him. Mack looked very good, getting 48 yards on only 4 carries, bringing up a bit of a dilemma at the position going forward.
Final Score: Seattle Seahawks 20, Indianapolis Colts 13
That bring an end to the first episode of The Rebuild, as we see that Colts sitting at 1-3. It's going to be a long season, but the light at the end of the tunnel is the Draft, where we surely have a very high pick. Thanks for reading.
